Hunger Action Month is a time to stand together to build awareness of and take action to fight hunger. Hunger is a very real issue for over 44 million Americans each and every day, including 1 in 5 children. Hunger is the distress that comes from not having enough food which leads to a multitude of other problems, including health decline, developmental delays, behavioral issues, and decreased productivity. As the number of those facing hunger and food insecurity has grown, so has the number of emergency food programs. Today there are more than 400, which serve 63,000 affiliated pantries and shelters, working tirelessly to ensure those in need of food can get it.

In 2012, the Federal government proclaimed September as National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month to bring awareness to pediatric cancer, which remains the leading cause of death by disease for children under the age of 14. The causes of pediatric cancer are still largely unknown, and though ongoing discoveries are resulting in new treatments, this heartbreaking disease continues to scar families and communities. According to estimates from the American Cancer Society, approximately 9,620 children under the age of 15 are expected to be diagnosed with some form of cancer in 2024. Researchers around the world continue to pioneer new therapies and explore the root causes of the disease, driving progress that could reveal cures or improved outcomes for patients.

Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually from September 15 - October 15 to celebrate the contributions that generations of Hispanic and Latino Americans have made to American history, society, and culture. The beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month - September 15 - is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Many local and national nonprofits are working to empower, protect and support Hispanic communities across multiple issue areas.

In September, people and organizations from all around the world work to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that persists around Alzheimer's disease and all types of dementia. Many still believe that Alzheimer's and other types of dementia are simply a normal part of the aging process - but the reality is that they are serious health issues leading to social care crises all around the globe. And although progress has been made in advancing research around causes and treatments, there is still so much to be discovered about these complex disorders. Please consider supporting these charities or the many others that exist to fund cutting-edge research, and support patients as well as their families and loved ones, facing an Alzheimer’s or dementia diagnosis.
