May Causes to Support in Groundswell

As we enter the early months of summer, we wanted to share a number of important causes taking center stage this month: Mental Health Awareness, Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage, National Foster Care Awareness, Memorial Day, World Blood Cancer Awareness Day, and National Pet Month.

Charitable organizations are doing incredible work on the frontlines to support the causes and communities that need it most. Through direct programming, research, advocacy, and more, they're making a real difference, but they rely on the support of donors like you to sustain their important work!

Join the Groundswell movement to learn about and support these nonprofits. Support these causes in May.

Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month aims to break the stigma surrounding mental health issues, educate the public, and advocate for policies that support people with mental illness and their families. The CDC reports that 1 in 5 Americans will experience a mental illness in a given year. However, stigma and misunderstanding can lead to delays in seeking help or in offering support. Numerous nonprofits are working tirelessly to help those living with anxiety, depression, and co-occurring disorders, and to help their loved ones find support as well.

Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month is observed annually in May to celebrate the contributions that generations of AAPIs have made to American history, society, and culture. The AAPI population is rapidly growing in the United States (making up approximately 50 distinct ethnic groups speaking over 100 languages) and is expected to surpass 40 million individuals by 2060. This month not only celebrates the rich heritage and myriad contributions of the AAPI community, but is also a critical opportunity to foster understanding and solidarity.

National Foster Care Awareness Month

May is National Foster Care Month, which is a time to acknowledge families and professionals who help children and youth in foster care find permanent homes. The challenges for children in the foster care system are massive - and disproportionately impact Black and Native American children. 50% of foster youth will not graduate high school on time; 60% of child trafficking victims have histories in foster care; and kids in foster care are four times more likely than other children to attempt suicide. Numerous  organizations are working to support and protect children in foster care, as well as engage at a national level to improve the system itself.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a national day of remembrance, to honor those in the armed forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice - their lives - for the United States. We honor their service by taking a moment to reflect with intention, whether participating in remembrance ceremonies, or putting flowers on memorials. We can also show our respect by supporting those they left behind - their families and loved ones. There are numerous nonprofits dedicated to honoring the memories of those who have fallen, and providing ongoing support to those left behind.

World Blood Cancer Awareness Day

World Blood Cancer Day, observed annually on May 28th, is dedicated to bring awareness to the fight against blood cancer. It seeks to increase public recognition of blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma, which collectively affect millions worldwide. Blood cancers can affect people of all ages and backgrounds, and they often require complex and costly treatments; but early detection and access to effective therapies can significantly improve survival rates. Nonprofit organizations not only fund research and push for medical advancements but also provide support and resources for patients and their families.

National Pet Month

National Pet Month is dedicated to recognizing the impact pets have on our lives and the reciprocal care we provide for them. This month-long observance serves several purposes: it encourages pet adoption, highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership, and celebrates the joy and companionship that pets bring to our lives. Pets not only offer companionship but also contribute to our mental and physical well-being. Studies have shown that pets can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and increase social interaction and physical activity. Many charities play a pivotal role in animal welfare—they rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome pets, as well as promote spaying and neutering to control the pet population.
