July is here, and as we take a break and enjoy the warmer weather, we wanted to share with our Groundswell community a number of important causes taking center stage this month: Celebrating Freedom & Voting Rights, Disability Pride Month, Plastic Free July, and UV Safety Month.

Charitable organizations are doing incredible work on the frontlines to support the causes and communities that need it most. Through direct programming, research, advocacy and more, they’re making a real difference. They rely on the support of donors like you to sustain their important work!

Join us on Groundswell to learn about this month’s causes, support featured nonprofits, and find volunteer opportunities in your neighborhood.

Celebrating Freedom & Voting Rights

As Americans celebrate their nation's independence on July 4th, the right to vote and participate freely in the electoral process is the epitome of that independence. Protecting the right to vote is important whether voting Republican, Democrat, Independent, Green, or any other party on the ballot. And ensuring equal access regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, economic status, or even zip code is critical to upholding democratic ideals. Organizations are working all day, every day, to ensure every American on every part of the political spectrum is able to participate in the democratic process.

Disability Pride Month

Disability Pride Month is a dedicated time to celebrate and amplify the voices, experiences, and rights of people with disabilities. It coincides with the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), enacted on July 26, 1990, which marked a watershed moment in civil rights, prohibiting discrimination based on disability.  The community of people with disabilities is diverse, so how individuals with disabilities define or think about disability pride will likely vary. Many define pride as celebrating and reclaiming visibility in public - pushing back against the historical patterns of hiding people with disabilities. It is also about proving that people with disabilities are not just surviving, but are thriving - and celebrating that fact.

Plastic Free July

Plastic Free July is a global movement that helps mobilize support for the solutions to plastic pollution. Human beings have produced more than 8 billion tons of plastic since the 1950s; but less than 10% has been recycled. The detrimental effects of plastic waste on ecosystems are profound. Marine animals often mistake plastic items for food, leading to entanglement, ingestion, and suffocation. This results in the death of countless marine species, including seabirds, turtles, whales, and dolphins. Plastic waste can also disrupt the balance of marine ecosystems, impacting biodiversity and overall ecological health.

UV Safety Month

UV Safety Month is aimed at promoting awareness about the dangers of excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. UV Safety Month focuses on educating the public about the risks associated with sun exposure, including skin cancer, premature aging, and other skin damage. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States and many other parts of the world. However, it is also one of the most preventable types. UV Safety Month plays a vital role in reducing the prevalence of skin cancer by educating people on safe sun practices.
