June is here, and as we prepare for the summertime we wanted to share with our Groundswell community a number of important causes taking center stage this month: PRIDE, World Oceans Day, Juneteenth, World Refugee Day, and Gun Violence Awareness.
Charitable organizations are doing incredible work on the frontlines to support the causes and communities that need it most. Through direct programming, research, advocacy and more, they’re making a real difference. They rely on the support of donors like you to sustain their important work!

PRIDE Month is held annually in June, commemorating the Stonewall Riots in 1969, which marked the beginning of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. PRIDE Month aims to promote self-affirmation, dignity, and equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals while increasing visibility and raising awareness about the unique experiences and challenges faced by this diverse community. Although great strides have been made in terms of LGBTQ+ rights, members of the LGBTQ+ community are still frequent victims of discrimination, harassment, and violence.

In celebration of World Oceans Day on June 8, Groundswell continues its commitment to spotlighting the urgent need to safeguard our oceans. Covering over 70% of the Earth's surface, oceans are central to our planet's life-support system, influencing climate and weather patterns while housing diverse marine life. Approximately 80% of all life on Earth is found in the oceans, which include some of the world’s most diverse ecosystems. This year, we highlight nonprofits working towards sustainable ocean management, focusing on combating pollution, overfishing, and habitat destruction.

Juneteenth (also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day) is June 19th - a date that commemorates the end of slavery in America. It is a celebration of Black culture and freedom that has carried great significance since it was first proclaimed a holiday in 1865. Its growing popularity - to include its designation as a Federal holiday in 2021 - signifies a level of recognition in America long overdue. In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions come together to acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence society today.

World Refugee Day, observed annually on June 20, raises awareness about the struggles of millions displaced by conflict or persecution. According to the United Nations, as of the end of 2023 there were nearly 103 million forcibly displaced people worldwide, a record high. Of these, over 32 million are classified as refugees—people forced to flee their country because of conflict, persecution, or serious threats to their safety. Nonprofits work tirelessly to assist refugees, providing essential resources, helping integrate refugees into new communities, and advocating for their rights, fostering a more inclusive, empathetic world.

Gun Violence Awareness Month is observed every June to raise awareness about the epidemic of gun violence and to honor and remember the lives of victims and survivors of gun violence. In 2023 alone, an estimated 163 mass shootings impacted communities across the United States. Regardless of one's position on gun control and the Second Amendment, all can agree that the senseless killing of the innocent needs to end. There are many nonprofit organizations working to prevent gun violence, working at both the local and national levels to support victims and also effect common sense change at the federal level.
