August Causes to Support in Groundswell

Backpack set out in front of a wall.

August is here, and as we prepare to say farewell to summer, we wanted to share with our Groundswell community a number of important causes taking center stage this month: National Back to School Month, Black Philanthropy Month, World Indigenous People’s Day, National Nonprofit Day, and World Humanitarian Day.

Charitable organizations are doing incredible work on the frontlines to support the causes and communities that need it most. Through direct programming, research, advocacy and more, they’re making a real difference. They rely on the support of donors like you to sustain their important work!

Join us on Groundswell to learn about this month’s causes, support featured nonprofits, and find volunteer opportunities in your neighborhood.

National Back to School Month

National Back to School Month, observed annually in August in the United States, is a time dedicated to preparing students, teachers, and parents for the upcoming academic year. During this month and throughout the summer, teachers work to prepare their classrooms for the new school year. But many face challenges; many teachers working in schools in low-income communities often lack essential resources. Well over 90% of public school teachers in the U.S. pay for supplies without reimbursement. Some teachers even have to purchase necessary items such as paper, pencils, and books for students who can't afford them.

Black Philanthropy Month

Although Americans give over $450 billion to charity each year, only a tiny fraction of that goes to Black organizations - despite growing calls to support the Black community and combat injustices that persist in the 21st century. As stated by Giving Gap, an organization founded to increase donations to Black organizations that continue to be systemically underfunded, Black-founded nonprofits are often the ones most likely to be grounded in the needs of the Black communities, have missions connected to positive action for Black lives, employ Black people, and empower Black leaders.

World’s Indigenous People Day

The International Day of the World’s Indigenous People on August 9 pays tribute to the indigenous communities of the world. It is estimated that there are about 370 to 500 million indigenous people living in 90 countries all over the world. Indigenous communities are under threat around the world due to challenges ranging from discrimination to climate change. Indigenous peoples make up 15% of the world's extreme poor, and they also suffer higher rates of landlessness, malnutrition and internal displacement than other groups.

National Nonprofit Day

August 17th is National Nonprofit Day, and Groundswell is thrilled to take this opportunity to share why it's important to support nonprofits. Nonprofits work across a variety of cause areas, including education, health, arts and culture, environment, human rights, and much more. They provide essential services, support, and resources to countless people, often in ways that governments and for-profit businesses do not or cannot. Many nonprofits function as social safety nets, providing aid to marginalized and disadvantaged individuals and groups.

World Humanitarian Day

World Humanitarian Day - August 19 - was formalized by the United Nations in 2009 to advocate for the survival, well-being and dignity of people affected by crises, and for the safety and security of aid workers. On this day, we pay tribute to humanitarian workers killed and injured in the course of their work, and to honor those who continue, despite the odds, to provide life-saving support and protection to people most in need. A glance at news headlines on any given day shows that humanitarian aid workers are risking their lives on the frontlines of crises around the world - from helping communities impacted by natural disasters to those displaced by armed conflict.
